On Saturday April 15th, at 12:23PM, Selkirk FD was toned out to a reported outdoor fire near Speeder Rd., which runs inside the CSX Selkirk Facility. Upon arriving the first officers on scene reported a heavy smoke and fire condition.
Within a short time Selkirk Command asked for a complete Town of Bethlehem Fire Department response as well as a complete response from Onesquethaw FD. As time progressed there was a call made to mutual aid departments to bring their Tankers to the call for water as there was an issue with the hydrants on the interior of the CSX yard, however the town hydrants on Speeder Rd. were functioning. Water supplies were established early on in the call and crews were quick in attacking the flames. Over 20 acres were burned.
Crews finally left the the scene at approx. 6:30PM, nearly six hours after the call first was toned out. Selkirk FD thanks everyone that helped get this extremely large outdoor fire under control, and extinguished. We thank the Delmar, Elsmere, Onesquethaw, Slingerlands, New Salem, and any other departments that assisted.
